Finals For Wrestling Championship Set After Day One

KANSAS CITY - The Oklahoma State Cowboys placed nine wrestlers in the finals during the first day of action at the Big 12 Wrestling Championship. This marks the second time in three years the squad advanced nine to the final round of action. Iowa State, Oklahoma and South Dakota State all advanced three wrestlers, while North Dakota State and Wyoming both placed one.

OSU also sits atop of the team standings with a total 140.5 points. Iowa State and Oklahoma sit in second and third with 72 points and 70.5 points respectively. South Dakota State tallied 68.5, while Wyoming recorded 51 and West Virginia posted 49 points. North Dakota State sits in seventh as Utah Valley comes in at eighth. Air Force and Northern Colorado round out the field, tied at 24.5 points each.

The Cowboys jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, running through the preliminary and quarterfinal rounds in the morning and the semifinal bouts in the afternoon. A round of consolation matches were also wrestled during the afternoon session.

In the 125 pound bracket, top seed Ryan Millhof (Oklahoma) will faceoff against second-seed Eddie Klimara of Oklahoma State, while No. 1 Cody Brewer (Oklahoma) and No. 2 Earl Hall (ISU) battle for the 133 pound title.

At the 141 pound dual, OSU’s Dean Heil and SDSU’s Seth Gross will battle it out, as fellow Jackrabbit Cody Pack will tussle with the No. 2 seeded Joseph Smith (OSU) for the 157 pound title. Alex Dieringer (OSU) along with ISU’s Tanner Weatherman will go at the 165 slot, while Chandler Rogers (OSU) and Lelund Weatherspoon (ISU) will go at 174.

Rounding out the finals, NDSU’s Hayden Zillmer opposes OSU’s Nolan Boyd for the 184 pound title. Preston Weigel of Oklahoma State and Nate Rotert of South Dakota State will go for the 197 pound championship, as Austin Marsden (OSU) and Tanner Harms (Wyoming) compete for the heavyweight title.
