UT’s Brown, TCU’s Brown and OSU’s Benge Selected For Big 12 Baseball Weekly Honors

Texas’ Porter Brown (player), TCU’s Cam Brown (pitcher) and Oklahoma State’s Carson Benge (newcomer) nabbed Big 12 baseball weekly honors for games ending March 26.

Porter Brown helped the Longhorns to a 4-0 week, and to their first appearance in the D1 Baseball Top 25 of the season, hitting a blistering .615 with two doubles, two home runs and eight RBIs. He provided the decisive runs in the first two wins of Texas’ series sweep of then-No. 14 Texas Tech, hitting a go-ahead two-run home run in the sixth inning, which held up as tying and winning runs in the 6-2 victory. In Saturday’s contest, the San Antonio, Texas native hit a leadoff double in the bottom of the ninth, then came around to score on a wild pitch as the Longhorns were 6-5 walk-off winners. For the week, the junior outfielder had a 1.878 OPS and scored six runs. It is Brown’s first career player of the week honor, having previously been bestowed with newcomer of the week in 2019.

Cam Brown threw a complete-game two-hit shutout in the Horned Frogs’ 14-0 seven-inning run rule victory over Kansas Sunday. After allowing the first two Jayhawk hitters to reach base, Brown retired 20 of the next 21 hitters he faced, only allowing a sixth-inning single that was erased on a double play. He struck out eight and walked just one batter, holding Kansas to a .091 batting average. It was the first career complete game and shutout for the junior from Flower Mound, Texas, while the 7.0 innings pitched matched a season-high for the right-hander. It is Brown’s second weekly honor of the season.

Benge shined at the dish and on the mound for the Cowboys, as OSU went 4-0 with a sweep of Baylor and a mid-week win over Wichita State. The Yukon, Oklahoma native hit .529 (10-for-19) to lead Oklahoma State, adding in two home runs, three doubles and seven RBIs, and had multiple hits in all four games. Against the Shockers, Benge pitched five innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out five to earn his first career win, while also going 3-of-4 as the designated hitter. It is the first Big 12 honor for the redshirt freshman outfielder/pitcher.
